Early settlers referred to Wantagh as "Jerusalem." The natural creek running north to south through Wantagh, which is still visible between the Wantagh Parkway and the housing developments along Wantagh Avenue, was originally the Jerusalem River.

In 1837, a post office was established for Jerusalem, but mail service from Brooklyn started in the 1780s. Jerusalem was renamed Ridgewood, and the original LIRR station was named "Ridgewood Station." Later, the town of Ridgewood was renamed Wantagh to avoid confusion with another New York town with the same name.

As part of his 5-day tour of Long Island, George Washington rode through Jerusalem on April 21, 1790. A plaque was placed on the Hempstead Turnpike by the Daughters of the American Revolution to commemorate Wahington's travels, which took him from Jerusalem Road on Hempstead to Jerusalem, to Merrick Road.
