Sarasota County, Florida, is home to the city of Venice. "Venice Island," a part of the island connected to the mainland by bridges over the artificially constructed Intracoastal Waterway, is located in the city. Venice is located in Southwest Florida and has a population of 25,463 people according to the 2020 Census. The North Port–Sarasota–Bradenton metropolitan statistical region includes Venice.
For thousands of years, Paleo-Indians lived in the area that is now Venice, with evidence reaching back to 8200 BCE. As the climate changed and some of the Pleistocene creatures that the Indians hunted were extinct, their successors discovered new ways to produce stone and bone weapons to cope with the changes. These descendants gave rise to the Archaic peoples. Evidence of their encampment and stone tools have been discovered in parts of Venice. Throughout millennia, the culture and people of the area changed. The Spanish encountered individuals who created mounds when they arrived in the 1500s.
In the 1800s, the first wave of "European" people arrived in the area. Venice was previously known as Horse and Chaise because of a carriage-like tree structure that demarcated the region for fishermen. In the 1870s, Robert Rickford Roberts established a property near the location that now bears his name, Roberts Bay. In 1883, a Frenchman named "Frank" Higel arrived in Venice with his wife and six sons. He paid $2,500 for land in the Roberts' homestead, which would be worth $73,000 in 2021. Higel established a citrus business that produced jams, pickled orange peel, lemon juice, and orange wine, among other canned citrus items.
In February, he was appointed postmaster, but the office closed months later, in November 1885, and services were relocated to Osprey. In 1888, a new post office was opened, this time with the name Venice, which Higel suggested because of its likeness to the Italian canal city. Bertha Palmer sold Fred H. Albee, an orthopedic surgeon famed for his bone-grafting surgeries, 112 acres (45 ha) in the 1920s to build Venice. Albee sold the property to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, but retained Nolen as the city planner.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.6 square miles (43.1 km2), of which 15.3 square miles (39.5 km2) is land and 1.4 square miles (3.5 km2), or 8.19 percent, is water. Venice has a humid subtropical climate with distinct rainy and dry seasons.
There were 9,680 households, with 7.0 percent having children under the age of 18, 49.2 percent married couples, 4.8 percent female householders without husbands, and 44.6 percent non-families. Individuals accounted for 40.3 percent of all households, with 30.3 percent having someone aged 65 or over living alone. The average household size was 1.76, and the average family size was 2.25.
