Syosset, locally known as Locust Grove, is an unincorporated hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, Long Island, New York. It had an estimated population of 19,453, according to a 2019 census of the community.
The hamlet is located roughly 32 miles east of Midtown Manhattan, 14 miles east of the border with Queens, 23 miles southeast of Throgs Neck Bridge, and approximately 168 miles east of Albany.
History
Syosset is a CDP with a rich and fascinating history, with roots traced back to its founding and evolution's turbulent and exciting days, setting the backdrop of the nation's earliest wild frontier days.
Originally known by early settlers as East Woods, Syosset was part of the land purchased by Welshman Robert Williams from the Matinecock Indians in 1648. The land included the territories that would become Hicksville, Jericho, Plainview, and Woodbury.
The name, believed to be of Native American origin, is more likely the result of a sloppy translation of the Dutch name for Oyster Bay, which is "Schouts Bay," pronounced see-OTTs and often spelled in early historical texts as "Siocits."
The hamlet of Oyster Bay was a well-established community that housed the government offices for the larger Oyster Bay Township. It briefly changed its name in 1846 to "Syosset." For the next two years, maps of the area listed the original Oyster Bay hamlet as "Syosset."
Before establishing the Long Island Rail Road, Syosset was a primarily farming community. Local farmers supplied dairy, produce, and meats to larger settlements on Long Island and eventually transported goods by horse and wagon to New York City.
Due to technical and financial problems, the LIRR extension originally intended to span from Hicksville to Cold Spring Harbor ended up stalling when it reached Syosset, a hamlet with fewer than 250 people. Syosset became the terminus of the branch, which meant farmers from the area had to travel to Syosset to transport goods via the railroad.
Soon, restaurants, hotels and stagecoach services sprang in the vicinity of the train station, making Syosset a transportation hub for residents of Oyster Bay, Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington, and other villages not served by the railroad.
By 1890, the once small community had a thriving pickle factory on the south side of the railroad station, with farmers raking in big profits supplying the facility with fields of cabbage and cucumbers. Eventually, a blight soured the cucumber industry, and farmers were forced to sell off land to wealthy Manhattan industrialists, replacing planting fields with extravagant mansions.
