Manitou was a Native American word that could have been translated as "god" or "spirit."

In 1837, the Long Island Rail Road arrived in adjacent Hicksville, boosting local agriculture. According to numerous reports, inhabitants of Manetto Hill petitioned the US Postal Service for a local post office in 1885 but were denied since a similar name was already in use upstate. After that, the hamlet was renamed "Plainview," after the view of the Hempstead Plains from the Manetto Hills' summit.

Plainview is still a rural community noted for growing cucumbers for Heinz pickle factories nearby Farmingdale and Hicksville. In the early 1900s, blight destroyed the cucumber crop, forcing many farmers to switch to potatoes. Following WWII, a potato blight, along with the desire of many returning GIs to relocate to more rural Long Island, prompted many farmers to sell their land, resulting in massive development and the emergence of "suburban sprawl."

Between 1950 and 1960, the hamlet grew from 1,155 to about 35,000 residents. The majority of the accessible land was developed or designated as parkland. While overall growth slowed, smaller remnant land areas were developed haphazardly. Some of the few remaining large properties have been turned into gated communities in recent years, in contrast to the majority of the dwellings in the neighborhood.

There were 8,963 households, with 36.5 percent having children under 18 and 73.0 percent being married couples. Individuals living alone accounted for 16.3% of all households, with 11.9 percent of those living alone being 65 or older. The average family size was 3.24 people, with a household size of 2.87 people. With 25.1 percent under the age of 18, 5.5 percent between the ages of 18 and 24, 26.0 percent between the ages of 25 and 44, 26.5 percent between the ages of 45 and 64, and 17.0 percent over the age of 65, the CDP population was diverse. The average age of the participants was 41 years old. For every 100 females, there were 94.3 men.
